Faith That Stood Against Death

It was supposed to be a joyful day.
On Friday evening, 30 November 2001, Daniel Ekechukwu, a Nigerian pastor, was driving with a friend to deliver a Christmas gift to his father. His wife had cautioned him not to go, but Daniel, like many husbands, felt it was just a simple errand.
That decision quickly took a tragic turn.
Somewhere on the road, his car reportedly lost its brakes and crashed violently into a concrete structure. Daniel, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was thrown into the windscreen and suffered severe head and chest injuries. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he was pronounced clinically dead by the attending doctor later that night. A death certificate was issued, and his body was taken to a mortuary where embalming procedures began.
To everyone around him, that should have been the end of the story.
But God had another plan.
A Wife Who Refused to Let Go
Daniel's wife, Nneka, believed in Jesus with everything in her. She had a firm conviction that death would not have the final word. She remembered that Evangelist Reinhard Bonnke was holding meetings in Onitsha through Christ for All Nations. Faith rose in her heart, and she pleaded with family members to allow Daniel's body to be taken there.
Though reluctant, they eventually agreed.
On Sunday afternoon, 2 December 2001—less than two days after Daniel had been pronounced dead—they transported his embalmed body to Grace of God Mission, Onitsha, where a church service connected with Bonnke's ministry was taking place. Unsure of what to do with a corpse, the security personnel hesitated before eventually allowing them inside. Daniel's body was taken to the church basement while the service continued upstairs.
There, pastors and believers gathered around the lifeless body and simply began to pray in the name of Jesus.
No theatrics.
No special formulas.
Just unwavering faith in the risen Christ.
And then, something extraordinary happened.
Resurrection Power in Real Time
Daniel's body suddenly began to twitch. Moments later, movement was noticed in his abdomen. Then he started breathing. His eyes opened. The man who had been certified dead, placed in a mortuary, and prepared for burial came back to life.
His recovery was witnessed by family members, mortuary workers, medical personnel, church leaders, and members of Christ for All Nations. The event became one of the most widely known modern miracle testimonies associated with Evangelist Reinhard Bonnke's ministry.
Reflecting on the miracle, Evangelist Reinhard Bonnke remarked:
"God has answered the rich man's prayer in Luke 16 by sending a man back from the dead to warn people."
Daniel later shared a vivid testimony of what he experienced during the period of his death. He spoke of the reality of heaven and hell and believed God had sent him back with an urgent commission—to warn people, preach the gospel, and call them to repentance while there is still time.
Faith That Stood Against Death
"Jesus said unto her, Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?" — John 11:40
Nneka's faith is a beautiful picture of the kind of trust Jesus honours. While everyone else accepted the doctor's verdict, she chose to hold on to God's power instead. Her confidence was not in wishful thinking but in the Lord Jesus Christ—the One who conquered death and still reigns today.
Her faith reminds us of Mary and Martha, who continued to believe in Jesus even after their brother Lazarus had been buried. Though humanly speaking it was too late, Jesus demonstrated that He is never limited by what appears impossible.
Faith does not deny reality; it looks beyond it to the God for whom nothing is impossible.
Today, God still honours those who dare to trust Him. Whether the need is spiritual, emotional, physical, or otherwise, no situation is beyond His power.
Prayer in the Name of Jesus Still Works
"That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth." — Philippians 2:10
Those gathered around Daniel's body had no human solution left. They simply called upon the name of Jesus.
That name has never lost its authority.
It still saves sinners.
It still heals the sick.
It still delivers the oppressed.
And it still reminds the world that Jesus Christ has conquered death forever.
The power is not in human effort but in the risen Saviour whose name is above every name.
Jesus Is the Resurrection and the Life
"I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live." — John 11:25
Daniel's testimony serves as a powerful reminder that Jesus Christ is alive today. His resurrection from the dead is not merely a historical event—it is the foundation of the Christian faith and the source of our living hope.
The same Lord who raised Lazarus, who Himself rose triumphantly from the grave, still works in the lives of those who trust Him. He brings life where there is spiritual death, hope where there is despair, healing where there is brokenness, and salvation to everyone who believes.
The Message Still Speaks Today
Daniel's story is more than an account of an extraordinary miracle. It is a reminder that Jesus Christ is still calling people to repentance, faith, and eternal life.
In Luke 16:27–31, the rich man pleaded that someone should return from the dead to warn his family. Abraham replied that they already had Moses and the Prophets. Yet, reflecting on Daniel's remarkable restoration to life, Evangelist Reinhard Bonnke observed:
"God has answered the rich man's prayer in Luke 16 by sending a man back from the dead to warn people."
Whether one focuses on the miracle itself or on Daniel's testimony afterward, the message is the same: life is temporary, eternity is real, and the gospel of Jesus Christ demands a response.
Jesus is alive.
His Word is true.
Today is still the day of salvation.
Conclusion
This story reminds us that Jesus Christ is not merely a figure in history—He is the living Lord.
The same Jesus who raised Lazarus, who rose from the grave, and who gave life back to Daniel Ekechukwu is still transforming lives today. He continues to save sinners, restore broken hearts, revive dying hopes, and call people into His kingdom.
Don't wait until life forces you to seek Him.
The risen Christ is calling you today.
Spiritual Lessons
- Jesus Christ is still the Resurrection and the Life.
- Genuine faith looks beyond human impossibilities to God's unlimited power.
- The name of Jesus still carries divine authority.
- God can bring life to situations that appear completely hopeless.
- Every miracle should ultimately point people to repentance and the gospel.
- The certainty of eternity should move every believer to live faithfully and share Christ with urgency.
Reflection & Discussion
1. Faith Beyond Human Possibility
Nneka refused to allow the doctor's verdict to become the final word. Are there situations in your life where you have allowed circumstances to speak louder than God's promises? What practical steps can you take to strengthen your faith in God's power?
2. Jesus Still Has Authority Over Death
Jesus declared, "I am the resurrection and the life." While we may not all witness a miracle like Daniel's, we all encounter situations that seem hopeless. In what ways have you experienced Christ bringing new life to a "dead" area of your life—whether spiritually, emotionally, physically, or financially?
3. Living Ready for Eternity
Daniel returned with a renewed urgency to preach the gospel and prepare people for eternity. If you truly believed that every day could be your last opportunity to serve Christ, what changes would you make in your priorities, relationships, and witness to others?
Prayer Points
- Lord Jesus, strengthen my faith to trust You even in the face of impossible situations.
- Father, let Your resurrection power flow into every dead situation in my life—spiritually, emotionally, physically, financially, and in every area where I need Your intervention.
- Holy Spirit, stir my heart to proclaim the gospel with boldness and urgency, knowing that eternity is real and today is the day of salvation.
- Lord, teach me to trust Your promises above every negative report and to stand firm in faith regardless of what I see.
- Jesus, thank You for conquering death and the grave. Help me to live daily in the hope, victory, and power of Your resurrection until I see You face to face.
