Still Fighting a Finished War

History tells the remarkable story of Hiroo Onoda, a Japanese intelligence officer stationed in the Philippines during World War II. When the war officially ended in 1945, Onoda refused to believe it. To him, the surrender of Japan was just enemy propaganda. For 29 years, he lived in hiding, fighting a war that had long ended.
Leaflets were dropped. Loudspeakers announced the end of the war. Family members called out to him. But he remained in the jungle, loyal to his last order: never surrender.
It wasn't until 1974, when his former commanding officer flew from Japan and personally told him the war was over, that Onoda finally laid down his arms.
His story is one of loyalty, but also a powerful illustration of the tragedy of ignorance — fighting battles that no longer need to be fought.
Still Struggling for What Grace Has Given
The same story plays out spiritually today.
Jesus Christ, through His death and resurrection, has already defeated sin and death. The battle for our salvation has been fought — and won. Yet many today are still striving, still hiding, still trying to earn God’s approval through rituals, rules, and religion.
They fast for forgiveness. They sacrifice for peace. They perform to be accepted.
Like Onoda, they do not know — or refuse to believe — that the war is already over.
"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast."
– Ephesians 2:8–9 (KJV)
God doesn’t need your performance. He wants your heart. Christ didn’t come to start a religion — He came to give you life.
"Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new."
– 2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV)
Come Out of Hiding
Friend, the war is over. You don’t need to keep sacrificing what Christ has already offered. You don’t need to keep striving for what He has already accomplished.
Religion says, "Do more." Jesus says, "It is done."
Just as Onoda needed to hear from his commanding officer to finally accept the truth, we need to hear the voice of our true Commander — Jesus Christ — calling us into rest, into grace, into truth.
Stop fighting. Come into the light. Step into the finished work of Christ.
"Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage."
– Galatians 5:1 (KJV)
Embrace the New Life
Jesus didn’t call you into a life of endless striving. He calls you into a relationship — into sonship — into peace. You don’t have to earn what’s already been freely given. You can live a life of freedom, joy, and truth through Christ.
The question is: Will you step out of hiding and into His light?
Prayer of Salvation
If you're ready to surrender your life to Jesus and accept what He has already done for you, pray this sincerely from your heart:
Lord Jesus, I come to You today. I know I am a sinner. I cannot save myself. I believe You died for me and rose again to give me new life. Today, I surrender my heart to You. I receive Your grace, Your forgiveness, and Your gift of salvation. Thank You for setting me free. I choose to walk with You — not in fear, not in religion, but in relationship and truth. In Your Name, I pray. Amen.
Important Lessons To Retain
- Christ's work for our salvation is finished; grace is received by faith, not earned by religious effort.
- Sincerity and persistence cannot make a false belief true. Onoda was loyal, but he was loyal to an order that was no longer in force.
- God's Word must have greater authority in our lives than fear, guilt, tradition, feelings, or the voices of our past.
- Religious activity can become another hiding place when it keeps us from trusting what Jesus has already accomplished.
- Freedom begins when we believe the good news and lay down the burden of trying to save or justify ourselves.
- Grace does not produce carelessness; it gives us a new identity and power to live in grateful obedience.
- Old habits of condemnation and striving may continue to speak, but believers can stand fast in the liberty Christ has given.
- The message of the finished work must be received personally and also carried to people who are still fighting unnecessary spiritual battles.
Closing Thought
Hiroo Onoda did not need a stronger weapon or a better hiding place. He needed to believe the authoritative announcement that the war was over.
At the cross, Jesus declared, “It is finished.” Stop trying to complete what Christ has completed. Lay down guilt, self-righteousness, fear, and endless striving. Receive His grace, stand upon His promises, and begin living like someone whom the Son has truly set free.
Reflection & Discussion
Take time to consider Onoda's long resistance to the news that the war had ended and Christ's finished work on the cross. If you are studying with others, discuss honestly and allow God's Word to identify any battle you are still fighting because you have not fully trusted His grace.
1. Believing The Authoritative Message
Onoda dismissed leaflets, announcements, and familiar voices because they contradicted what he had accepted as his final order. His freedom began when he received an authoritative word he could trust.
Reflect:
- What does “It is finished” mean for the way I approach God?
- Which voice most often overrules Scripture in my life: guilt, fear, feelings, tradition, or the opinions of people?
- Do I truly believe that salvation is God's gift, or am I still trying to prove that I deserve His acceptance?
Discuss:
- Why can good news be difficult to believe after someone has lived under fear or falsehood for a long time?
- How do Ephesians 2:8-9 and John 19:30 correct the belief that we can earn salvation?
2. Laying Down Religious Striving
Prayer, fasting, giving, and service are precious when they flow from love and faith. They become burdens when we use them as payment for forgiveness or as proof that God must accept us.
Reflect:
- Do my spiritual disciplines flow from gratitude, or from fear that God will reject me?
- Where am I exhausted from trying to achieve what God invites me to receive?
- What burden of self-condemnation do I need to lay down today?
Discuss:
- What is the difference between obeying God to earn acceptance and obeying because we have been accepted in Christ?
- How can churches teach spiritual discipline without turning grace into religious performance?
3. Living In The Freedom Christ Gives
Accepting that the war was over required Onoda to leave the jungle and enter a changed world. In the same way, believing the gospel calls us to leave old hiding places and walk in a new identity.
Reflect:
- Which old identity, habit, or fear still keeps me living as though Christ has not made me new?
- What would change this week if I lived from acceptance rather than for acceptance?
- Where must I stand firm so that I do not return to a yoke of bondage?
Discuss:
- Why does grace lead to grateful obedience rather than careless living?
- What practical habits help believers renew their minds and remain established in gospel freedom?
4. Calling Others Out Of Hiding
Onoda needed someone to bring the message close enough for him to hear and trust it. Many people around us are still hiding from God, trapped in guilt, fear, or religion.
Reflect:
- Who in my life may need to hear that Christ offers grace, forgiveness, and new life?
- Does the way I speak about God invite burdened people toward Christ or push them deeper into fear?
- Am I prepared to explain simply how a person receives salvation by faith?
Discuss:
- How can believers communicate the finished work of Christ without minimising repentance and discipleship?
- What can a Christian community do to help new believers exchange old patterns of shame for their new identity in Christ?
Personal Challenge
Write down one spiritual battle you have continued to fight through guilt, self-effort, or fear. Beside it, write the promise of God that answers it. Read that promise aloud each day this week, thank Christ for His finished work, and take one practical step that agrees with your freedom. Share the good news of grace with one person who may still be hiding from God.
Prayer Points
- Father, thank You that Jesus fully accomplished the work of salvation through His death and resurrection.
- Lord, forgive me for trusting my performance, religious activity, or good works instead of resting in Your grace.
- Holy Spirit, expose every lie, fear, tradition, and old identity that keeps me fighting a battle Christ has already won.
- Father, help me receive Your forgiveness by faith and silence every voice of condemnation with the truth of Your Word.
- Lord, teach me to obey from love and gratitude, not as an attempt to earn Your acceptance.
- Give me grace to stand fast in the liberty of Christ and never return to the bondage of guilt, fear, or empty religion.
- Father, make me a faithful messenger of the gospel to people who are still hiding and striving without hope.
- Let the reality of my new life in Christ produce freedom, joy, holiness, peace, and enduring faith.
