The Resurrection That Sparked Global Attention
The Documented Story of Pastor Daniel Ekechukwu's Reported Resurrection
Few modern Christian testimonies have generated as much discussion as the story of Pastor Daniel Ekechukwu, a Nigerian pastor whose reported return to life after being declared dead became known around the world through the ministry of Evangelist Reinhard Bonnke and Christ for All Nations (CFAN).
Unlike many miracle stories that rely on second-hand reports, this incident was documented through interviews with family members, medical personnel, the mortuary attendant, pastors who witnessed the event, and Christ for All Nations. Whether one approaches the story from a perspective of faith or historical investigation, it remains one of the most remarkable modern testimonies associated with the Christian faith.
The Journey That Changed Everything
On Friday, 30 November 2001, Pastor Daniel Ekechukwu set out to deliver a Christmas gift to his father. Before leaving home, he and his wife, Nneka, had experienced a disagreement. Although she later tried to reconcile with him, Daniel admitted that he left home still carrying anger in his heart.
While driving home that evening, the brakes on his Mercedes reportedly failed as he descended a steep hill near Onitsha. Unable to stop the vehicle, it crashed into a concrete safety barrier. Daniel was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown violently against the steering wheel and windscreen, suffering severe chest and head injuries.
Bystanders rushed him to a nearby hospital. As his condition deteriorated, he requested to be transferred to another hospital where his personal doctor practised. During the ambulance journey, however, his condition worsened dramatically.
After being examined by medical personnel at several hospitals, Daniel was officially pronounced dead at approximately 11:30 PM on Friday, 30 November 2001. A death certificate was issued, and his body was released to his family.
The Mortuary
Daniel's body was taken to Ikeduru General Hospital Mortuary (now known as Inyishi Community Hospital Mortuary) in Imo State.
Because the mortuary had no refrigeration facilities, the mortician began the embalming process by injecting embalming chemicals into his body. According to the documented testimony, the embalming procedure was started, although it was not completed in the normal manner. The mortician, Darlington Manu, would later become one of the eyewitnesses interviewed in the Christ for All Nations documentary.
To everyone present, Daniel's story had ended.
Except for one person.
Nneka's Unshakable Faith
Daniel's wife, Nneka Ekechukwu, refused to accept that death would have the final word.
During the night she became convinced that she should take her husband's body to Grace of God Mission, Onitsha, where Evangelist Reinhard Bonnke was participating in a church dedication programme through Christ for All Nations.
Family members initially considered the idea unreasonable. Nevertheless, after much persuasion, they agreed.
On Sunday, 2 December 2001, nearly 42 hours after Daniel had been pronounced dead, his embalmed body was placed inside a coffin and transported to the church. Security personnel initially refused to allow a coffin into the premises because of heightened security concerns surrounding Bonnke's meetings. Eventually, Daniel's body was removed from the coffin and taken into the church basement while the service continued upstairs.
The Prayer Meeting in the Basement
It is important to note that Reinhard Bonnke himself was not praying over Daniel's body.
While Bonnke ministered to thousands in the main auditorium, several pastors and believers gathered quietly around Daniel's body in the church basement.
There was no public announcement.
No dramatic ceremony.
No attempt to attract attention.
They simply prayed in the name of Jesus.
After some time, witnesses reported seeing slight movements in Daniel's body.
Then irregular breathing began.
Believers continued praying and gently massaging his stiff limbs as circulation slowly appeared to return.
Finally, sometime between approximately 3:50 PM and 5:15 PM on Sunday, 2 December 2001, Daniel sneezed, opened his eyes, and gradually regained consciousness.
Witnesses to the Event
One reason this testimony received worldwide attention is that multiple independent witnesses were interviewed in the official documentary.
Among them were:
- Daniel Ekechukwu
- Nneka Ekechukwu
- The attending physician who certified his death
- The mortuary attendant who embalmed him
- Daniel's father
- Pastors present during the prayer meeting
- Members of Christ for All Nations
The documentary also displays copies of the medical report and death certificate issued before Daniel's reported resurrection.
Daniel's Personal Testimony
After recovering, Daniel testified that during the period in which he was physically dead he experienced vivid visions of heaven and hell and believed God sent him back with a solemn commission to preach repentance and prepare people for eternity.
It is important to distinguish between the two aspects of this story:
- The reported resurrection is the event documented by eyewitnesses, medical records, and the Christ for All Nations documentary.
- Daniel's descriptions of heaven and hell are his personal testimony. While many Christians have found them spiritually challenging, they should be evaluated in the light of Scripture rather than treated as equal to biblical revelation.
This distinction helps readers appreciate both the documented event and the biblical principle that Scripture remains the believer's final authority.
Reinhard Bonnke's Remark
Although Bonnke repeatedly stated that he was not personally present in the basement when Daniel revived, he publicly reflected on the miracle by saying:
"God has answered the rich man's prayer in Luke 16 by sending a man back from the dead to warn people."
The statement refers to Luke 16:19–31, where the rich man begged Abraham to send someone back from the dead to warn his family. Abraham answered that they already had Moses and the Prophets.
Bonnke believed Daniel's testimony served as a modern reminder that eternity is real and that people should respond to the gospel while they still have the opportunity.
Why This Story Matters
Whether one views this event primarily as a miracle, a historical testimony, or an apologetic for the Christian faith, its central message is unmistakable.
The focus is not Daniel.
The focus is Jesus Christ.
The testimony points to the One who declared:
"I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live." — John 11:25
Daniel himself consistently redirected attention away from the miracle and toward repentance, forgiveness, holy living, and faith in Christ.
That is perhaps the greatest lesson of the entire account.

Final Thought
Stories like Daniel Ekechukwu's naturally invite both faith and questions. Christians differ in how they evaluate extraordinary testimonies, but Scripture encourages believers to "test all things" while holding firmly to what is true (1 Thessalonians 5:21).
Regardless of one's conclusions about every detail of Daniel's personal testimony, the message of the gospel remains unchanged: Jesus Christ died, rose again, and offers eternal life to all who believe in Him. That truth does not rest on modern testimonies—it rests on the historical resurrection of Christ recorded in Scripture.
