Introduction
God's desire is that His Church should grow. Growth is not only about increasing numbers; it involves spiritual maturity, stronger disciples, greater influence, adequate resources, and a deeper relationship with God.
Just as a healthy child grows in different areas of life, a healthy church must grow in every aspect. The growth of the church begins with the growth of individual believers. When Christians grow spiritually and become fruitful, the church naturally experiences growth.
Jesus expects every believer to bear fruit.
"Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples." — John 15:8
Therefore, church growth is not merely the responsibility of pastors and leaders; it is the responsibility of every believer.
The Relationship Between Personal Growth and Church Growth
The church is made up of individual believers. Consequently, the spiritual condition of the members will determine the condition of the church.
A church filled with growing believers will become a growing church. Likewise, a church filled with stagnant believers will struggle to grow.
Paul explained that God's desire is for believers to mature in Christ.
"Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ." — Ephesians 4:13
As believers mature, they become effective witnesses, faithful servants, committed disciples, and fruitful members of the body of Christ.
The Fruits That Must Be Seen in Every Believer
A growing Christian must bear fruit. Two major fruits should be evident in the life of every child of God.
1. Spiritual Fruit (Character Fruit)
The first evidence of growth is the fruit of the Spirit.
"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance..." — Galatians 5:22–23
As believers grow, these qualities become visible in their lives. They become more loving, patient, humble, forgiving, and Christ-like.
A believer who claims to be growing spiritually but does not display the fruit of the Spirit needs to examine his or her spiritual condition.
2. The Fruit of Soul Winning
The second fruit is winning souls for Christ.
Jesus compares believers to branches that must bear fruit.
"Every branch in me that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit." — John 15:2
God expects every believer to be involved in bringing others into His Kingdom.
Jesus commissioned His followers:
"Go ye therefore, and teach all nations..." — Matthew 28:19
"And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature." — Mark 16:15
Winning souls is not only for evangelists or pastors. Every Christian has been called to be a witness for Christ.
Beyond Soul Winning: Making Disciples
Church growth does not end with bringing people to Christ. New converts must be discipled and established in the faith.
Jesus did not say, "Make converts"; He said:
"Go ye therefore, and teach all nations... teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you." — Matthew 28:19–20
A strong church is built by making disciples who can also disciple others.
Paul instructed Timothy:
"And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also." — 2 Timothy 2:2
Therefore, soul winning and discipleship must go together.
Areas Where the Church Must Grow
1. Spiritual Growth
The church must grow in holiness, prayer, faith, knowledge of God's Word, obedience, and Christ-like character.
"But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ." — 2 Peter 3:18
Without spiritual growth, every other form of growth becomes unhealthy.
2. Numerical Growth
God desires that more people be saved and added to His Church.
The early church experienced continuous numerical growth because they preached the Gospel faithfully.
"And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved." — Acts 2:47
"Then had the churches rest... and were multiplied." — Acts 9:31
Numerical growth is the result of evangelism, discipleship, prayer, and the power of the Holy Spirit.
3. Infrastructural Growth
As the church grows numerically, there will be a need for additional facilities, equipment, classrooms, offices, parking spaces, and other resources.
When God increases the people, provision must be made to accommodate them.
"Enlarge the place of thy tent, and let them stretch forth the curtains of thine habitations: spare not, lengthen thy cords, and strengthen thy stakes." — Isaiah 54:2
Wise churches prepare for growth before growth arrives.
4. Financial Growth
Financial growth enables the church to carry out God's work effectively.
The early church experienced such generosity and financial strength that the needs of members were met.
"Neither was there any among them that lacked..." — Acts 4:34
Financial growth supports:
- Evangelism
- Missions
- Church projects
- Benevolence
- Discipleship programmes
- Ministry expansion
God blesses His people so they can become a blessing to others.
"Give, and it shall be given unto you..." — Luke 6:38
What We Need to Ensure Growth
1. Prayer
Every genuine church growth begins with prayer.
The early church devoted themselves to prayer and experienced supernatural growth.
"And they continued steadfastly... in prayers." — Acts 2:42
"Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest." — Matthew 9:38
Prayer brings God's power, direction, and intervention.
2. Establishing Ourselves in God's Word
The Word of God builds believers and causes spiritual maturity.
"As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby." — 1 Peter 2:2
"All scripture is given by inspiration of God... that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works." — 2 Timothy 3:16–17
A church that is grounded in the Word will remain strong and healthy.
3. Reaching Out to Members and Strengthening Their Faith
Members must be cared for, encouraged, taught, and followed up.
The early church paid attention to nurturing believers.
"Therefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another." — 1 Thessalonians 5:11
"Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ." — Galatians 6:2
Strong believers build a strong church.
4. Reaching Out to Unbelievers
The Gospel must continually be taken to those who do not know Christ.
"The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise." — Proverbs 11:30
"Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature." — Mark 16:15
A church that stops evangelizing will eventually stop growing.
What We Need to Achieve Growth
1. Commitment
Growth requires commitment from every member.
"Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful." — 1 Corinthians 4:2
2. Determination
We must remain steadfast even when growth seems slow.
"And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not." — Galatians 6:9
3. Focus
The church must stay focused on God's mission.
"This one thing I do..." — Philippians 3:13
Distractions can hinder growth.
4. Plans and Strategies
Prayer must be accompanied by wise planning.
"For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost?" — Luke 14:28
"Through wisdom is an house builded; and by understanding it is established." — Proverbs 24:3
God's work should be done prayerfully and strategically.
The Role Every Member Must Play
Church growth is everyone's responsibility.
1. Attend Church Faithfully
Regular attendance encourages others and strengthens the body of Christ.
"Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together..." — Hebrews 10:25
2. Help Others Grow Spiritually
Encourage, teach, mentor, and pray for fellow believers.
"Exhort one another daily..." — Hebrews 3:13
"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly... teaching and admonishing one another..." — Colossians 3:16
3. Participate in Evangelism
Share Christ with family, friends, neighbours, and colleagues.
"Ye shall be witnesses unto me..." — Acts 1:8
4. Pray for the Church
Pray for pastors, leaders, workers, members, and church growth.
"Brethren, pray for us." — 1 Thessalonians 5:25
5. Support the Work of God
Support the ministry with your time, gifts, talents, and resources.
"As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another." — 1 Peter 4:10
Conclusion
Church growth is God's will and God's expectation. Every believer must grow spiritually, bear the fruit of the Spirit, win souls, and help make disciples. As we commit ourselves to prayer, God's Word, evangelism, discipleship, and faithful service, the church will experience spiritual, numerical, infrastructural, and financial growth.
"So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase." — 1 Corinthians 3:7
May God grant us the wisdom, commitment, and grace to labour together for the growth of His Church. Amen.
